There’s something truly special about starting the day with a warm cup of traditional Greek coffee.
For me, it’s more than just a morning pick-me-up—it’s a ritual that blends flavor, history, and spiritual connection into one calming practice.
ONE FOR ME, ONE FOR MY ANCESTORS
My version of Greek coffee includes a pinch of cardamom and a splash of orange blossom water, turning it into a comforting, homey brew that fills my space with an inviting aroma. I make it in a small copper pot, known as a briki (μπρίκι) in Greek, which has its roots in the Turkish ibrik. This coffee tradition traveled to Greece during the Ottoman Empire, and while it was once called "Turkish coffee," the name shifted to “Greek coffee” in the late 60s as a form of protest against the Greeks being expelled from Istanbul in 1964.
But my coffee ritual goes beyond just the drink. I pour one cup for myself and another for my ancestors. Once I’ve enjoyed my coffee, I flip my cup onto the plate, letting the grounds settle, and prepare to read the patterns they form—a practice that offers insights and messages. I also flip the ancestral cup onto their plate, sitting with my intuition to “listen” to what they have to say through the symbols in the coffee grounds. They’ve got plenty to share!
CONNECTING WITH YOUR PRACTICE
I’ve been practicing divination for about 20 years now, and it’s a journey that never stops unfolding. The more you show up for a practice, the more it reveals to you. Each morning, as I sit with my coffee cups, the messages become clearer and more meaningful.
If you’ve ever felt drawn to explore divination through coffee, tea leaves, or any other ancestral tools, don’t hesitate to give it a try. It’s not about having a natural gift; it’s about showing up, practicing, and embracing the discomfort of learning to listen. Your ancestors’ wisdom is there, waiting for you to tap into it.
And if you ever need guidance on building your own magical practice or connecting with your personal magic, I’m here to help. This is a big part of the work I offer, and I’d love to support you on your journey.
